Welcome to Acute Care Surgical Services
The Division of Acute Care Surgical Services provides the highest quality care for a broad spectrum of surgical diseases including the most critically ill and injured patients.
Our faculty physicians are double-boarded in general surgery and surgical intensive care and specialize in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, elective general surgery, and surgical critical care. Our trauma center is designated a level I trauma center by the state of Virginia and nationally verified by the American College of Surgeons.
Our interdisciplinary specialties include:

VCU Medical Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the region verified by the State of Virginia and the American College of Surgeons for Adult, Pediatric, and Burn trauma.

Annual Rao R. Ivatury Trauma Symposium
Center for Trauma & Critical Care Education
The Center for Trauma and Critical Care Education (CTCCE) offers comprehensive continuing education, paramedic courses, and outreach serving the commonwealth of Virginia and beyond. They are also responsible for organizing the annual Rao R Ivatury Trauma Symposium.
Surgical Critical Care Fellowship
Education is a core function of the division with a multi-faceted approach including pre-hospital, nursing, advanced practice providers, medical students, residents, fellows and all other providers who care for our patients.
Our one year fellowship program in surgical critical care is ACGME accredited and focuses on intensive clinical training in our surgical trauma intensive care unit (STICU).
