Welcome to Acute Care Surgical Services
The Division of Acute Care Surgical Services provides the highest quality care for a broad spectrum of surgical diseases including the most critically ill and injured patients.
Our faculty physicians are double-boarded in general surgery and surgical intensive care and specialize in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, elective general surgery, and surgical critical care. Our trauma center is designated a level I trauma center by the state of Virginia and nationally verified by the American College of Surgeons.

VCU Medical Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the region verified by the State of Virginia and the American College of Surgeons for Adult, Pediatric, and Burn trauma.
Surgery Education
Education is a core function of the division with a multi-faceted approach including pre-hospital, nursing, advanced practice providers, medical students, residents, fellows and all other providers who care for our patients.
Our one year Fellowship Program in surgical critical care is ACGME accredited and focuses on intensive clinical training in our surgical trauma intensive care unit.
The Center for Trauma and Critical Care Education offers comprehensive continuing education, paramedic courses, and outreach serving the commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.

Surgical Critical Care FellowshipResearch
Research areas include injury outcome research, translational research, organ preservation during traumatic injury, reperfusion injury in hemorrhagic shock and mechanisms of lethal critical care illness after traumatic injury. Click here to learn more about our extensive research portfolio.
New Faculty Announcement
Join us as we welcome our new faculty to the Division:
Stacy Street, MD
Assistant Clinical Professor
Dr. Street received her medical degree from Marshall University School of Medicine, now the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. She went on to complete her general surgery residency at the Medical College of Georgia and surgical research at the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics. Her areas of expertise and interest include wound healing, advanced wound care, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and research related to clinical practices in wound care.

Ashley Slaughter, MD
Assistant Professor of Surgery
Dr. Slaughter received her medical degree from the University of Rochester and went on to complete her general surgery residency here at VCU. She completed her fellowship in surgical critical care at Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Slaughter has particular interest in acute care and trauma surgery, injury and violence prevention, as well as community outreach.
