Annette Dean Empowerment Fund

Annette joined the VCU Department of Surgery in January 2015 with years of nursing experience in the field of Colon and Rectal Surgery. While she did not know it at the time, she was the original member of what became the division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at VCU. As CRS grew, Annette was instrumental in training every new team member. Annette saw ways to expand her knowledge and skills to become even more indispensable. She got certified in Wound and Ostomy Care to fill in care gaps for our vulnerable ostomy patients. Annette then went on to earn her Masters degree in Nursing. Annette had a calm, encouraging touch for her patients. Annette was willing to tackle hard problems. When posed with a challenge, she would say, Leave it with me!”.

Annette encouraged colleagues and friends to imagine bigger and better. Multiple people today have an advanced degree or business because Annette encouraged them to take a leap of faith and believe in themselves.

Annette’s selfless acts will be remembered through all of us and the care and knowledge we give to patients. She is an influence and light that will continue to shine through us.

Because of Annette’s unfailing commitment to education, to improving CRS treatment and for team members to do the same, we have opened an endowed education fund in her name.
