Healing Patients and Reaching New Heights

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery continues to lead the way in advancing cardiac surgery. VCU Medical Center's exceptional performance in cardiology and heart surgery has been acknowledged nationally, earning an impressive #47 ranking by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, we are proud to share that Dr. Julliard received specialized training in airway surgery at Toronto General Hospital. Since his return, in collaboration with ENT surgery and interventional pulmonary service, we have successfully performed 10 complex airway surgery cases at VCU. Previously, patients had to travel long distances for such procedures, but now we can provide expertise and positive outcomes locally. As a result, we aspire to establish ourselves as a premier airway surgery center for the Mid-Atlantic region within the next few years.

Furthermore, we have made significant advancements in robotic surgery pathways in thoracic surgery, completing over 100 cases last year. Additionally, we have introduced the links procedure for reflux work and continue to perform other complex surgeries involving the chest cavity.

Another remarkable milestone for our division was the completion of our 150th thoracic surgery case at the McGuire VA Hospital last year. Since the initiation of this practice two years ago, we have observed remarkable progress in our surgical outcomes. Dr. Shah and his team displayed their expertise in a complex case involving a 20-year-old patient with myasthenia gravis and a history of chest surgeries. This intricate case necessitated close collaboration with various specialties and involved several months of ongoing treatment. Dr. Shah's patient-centered approach is evident as he stated, "I treat my patients as if they were my own family. Active listening, comforting them, and developing a comprehensive treatment plan are my top priorities." Throughout the coordination of care, Dr. Shah consistently emphasizes the significance of treating all patients with the utmost respect and compassion. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our skilled team, the patient has achieved a remarkable recovery.
