October 2018: New Faculty News

Eric D. Nelson, MD pediatric urology Please join us as we welcome Eric D. Nelson, MD, to the Division of Urology.

Dr. Nelson comes to us from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine where he was an Assistant Professor. A pediatric urology specialist in pediatric kidney stone disease with a special interest in adolescent varicocele surgery, he will be seeing patients at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

AUGUST 2018: New Faculty Joins Division

Luriel Smith-Harrison, MD Please join us as we welcome Luriel Smith-Harrison, MD, Assistant Professor, to the Division of Urology.

Dr. Smith-Harrison joins us from the Medical College of Wisconsin where he completed his Fellowship in Male Infertility and Sexual Medicine. He completed his residency training at University of Virginia with research interests in oncofertility.

Having grown up in the area, Dr. Smith is excited to be back in Richmond and join the VCU Surgery team!

APRIL 2018: Medical Student Research Day

Please join the Division in congratulating Ms. Hameeda Naimi, VCU School of Medicine, on her outstanding poster presentation at this year's Medical Student Research Day!

Ms Naimi's poster, entitled “Characterization of Bladder Sensation Event Descriptions During Non-Invasive Oral Hydration in Health Adults” was awarded FIRST PLACE by this year's judges. This high honor is accompanied by an award of $1000, made possible by the G. Watson James III, M.D. Scholarship Endowment.

Having worked with Warren Koontz Professor of Urologic Research, Adam Klausner, MD, and his research group last summer, Hameeda also won the clinical essay competition at the national Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine, & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) meeting on the same project. Her accomplishment will also be recognized at Medical Student Award Day. Congratulations Hameeda!!

JUNE 2017: Adam Klausner, MD Associate Professor, Division of Urology, has been named as New Associate Chair for Clinical & Translational Research at VCU Department of Surgery.

Dr. Klausner is also the Director of Neurourology, Female Urology and Voiding Dysfunction at VCU Health, and holds additional appointments with VCU Obstetrics & Gynecology at McGuire VA Medical and UVA Medical Center.

Please welcome John Edmondson, MD to the Division of Surgical Urology

Dr. EdmJohn Edmondson, MD Pediatric Urologist at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCUondson joined the Division on October 10, 2016 as a pediatric urologist.  A Richmond native, Dr. Edmondson attended James Madison University and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.  He trained in Urology at MCV Hospitals before completing his post-graduate training at Monash University in Australia and a Pediatric Urology Fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago.

Dr. Edmondson’s clinical interests are reconstruction of genitourinary anomalies, hypospadias and ambiguous genitalia, spina bifida, undescended testes and vesicoureteral reflux. Please join us in welcoming C.D. Anthony Herndon, MD, FAAP, FACS, Professor of Surgery in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery.

Dr. Herndon will be the new Director of Pediatric Urology at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. He comes to us from UVA School of Medicine and is board certified in Urology and Pediatric Urology.

His specialties include continent urinary reconstruction, hypospadias/ambiguous genitalia, prenatal hydronephrosis, robotic surgery, undescended testes, vesicoureteral reflux, and spina bifada.

For the past several years, Dr. Lance Hampton and a urology resident has traveled to Hue, Vietnam to volunteer their time and training as part of IVUmed's “Teach One, Reach Many” campaign. This year, Dr. Tyler Roseman will be traveling to Vietnam along with chief resident, Dr. MaryEllen Pace. We encourage you support this year's surgical team by visiting IVUmed's website.


Our volunteers donate their time and travel costs to provide life-changing surgical training. We are asking you to join our campaign to fund surgeries, purchase supplies, increase scholarships and provide the support necessary to realize the vision of a world where everyone has access to the urological surgical care they need.

Researchers receive $1.7 million grant to improve diagnosis, treatment of overactive bladder
