New Massey HIPEC procedure offers hope to patients with advance abdominal cancers

"Massey recently became the only cancer care provider in the region to offer HIPEC, which takes eight to ten hours to complete. Dr. Fernandez and his team performed the first procedure on January 5."

VCU Massey Cancer Center now offering HIPEC for advance abdominal cancers

Leopoldo Fernandez, MDLeopoldo Fernandez, MD, surgical oncologist, is now seeing patients for treatment of advanced or complex abdominal cancers.

HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy) is a complex procedure involving cytoreduction surgery followed by a heated chemotherapy solution circulated continuously throughout the abdominal cavity. The chemotherapy solution helps kill any remaining cancer cells and reduces the risk of cancer recurrence. There is substantial evidence showing HIPEC is an effective treatment for several gastrointestinal cancers.
