Rotations, Call Schedule, & Division Conferences

HAND SURGERY ROTATION

Combined plastic surgery and orthopedic experience gives the hand surgery resident a broad perspective on surgery of the hand. Clinics are staffed by experienced orthopedic and plastic surgery trained hand surgeons. Residents see and treat common hand problems in addition to microvascular and flap reconstruction, brachial plexus injuries, and reconstruction for the paralyzed extremity including tendon and muscle transfer.

The hand resident is encouraged to attend any of the hand surgery practices in the community as well as the hand journal club and VA tetraplegia clinic and OR.

COMMUNITY PLASTIC SURGERY ROTATION

An exceptional variety of aesthetic and reconstructive procedures is available with MCV and community based plastic surgeons. We have established working relationships with many of the community hospitals including Chippenham, Henrico Doctors, Johnston-Willis, Retreat and St. Mary's.

Exposure to smaller office based practices will offer the community resident valuable insight into office setup and office-based surgical procedures.

CALL SCHEDULE

Residents are on call approximately every fourth night and every fourth weekend.

DIVISION CONFERENCES

Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds/Pre-Op Conference — Weekly
A presentation of all scheduled cases for the coming week with a discussion of the disease process, indications for surgery and the choice of operation. This is carried out in a question and answer format with faculty leadership.

Laboratory Research Conference

Hand Journal Club
A review of pertinent articles from the past months of Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery presented by the fellows with faculty comment.

General Surgery Grand Rounds | Surgery Grand Rounds Schedule — Weekly

Plastic Surgery Journal Club — Monthly

Resident Case Presentations
A conference presented by one of the fellows at which he/she shows four or five cases completed with attending supervision. This includes pre-op pictures and post-op pictures with a faculty-lead discussion of the patient’s disease process, indications for operation and choice of operation and outcome.

M & M Conference
Discussion of complications and adverse outcomes is a vital part of any residency program. Even the most minor complication can serve as a valuable teaching tool. With this in mind, conferences are held every two months to discuss any occurrences and ensure that we meet and exceed the standard of care.

Faculty Lecture and Visiting Professors
Regular conferences, which have a consistent format and specific lectures on topics of particular interest will be given by either faculty or visiting lecturers. Our goal with these conferences is to cover all the various aspects of Plastic Surgery in a three-year period.

Microsurgery Lab — Monthly

Dr. Blanchett's Journal Club
